Knee Arthroscopy Surgery


Knee Arthroscopy and Meniscectomy (Cartilage surgery)

Meniscal (cartilage) tear -before excision

Appearance after limited removal of torn meniscus

Rehabilitation recommendations after Arthroscopic Meniscal (Cartilage) Surgery

Targets:

  1. Manage swelling and pain: 0-2 weeks
  2. Regain full range of movement: 0-2 weeks
  3. Gentle training: 3-4 weeks
  4. Return to sports: 3-6 weeks

Week 1:

Swelling control: rest, ice, compression, elevation

VMO activation: isometric exercises

Gait training and control

Range of motion exercises as tolerated- active and passive.

 

Week 2:

Achieve full range of movement

Reduce scar tissue by mobilising soft tissue

Strengthen quadriceps, hamstring and hip muscles – isokinetic exercises.

Stretch- ITB, Quadriceps, Hamstrings, calf muscles and hip rotators

Week 3:

Closed and open chain exercises, proprioceptive exercises, etc.

Week 4-5:

Gentle training

Week 6:

Return to sports
